NYU: International Health Program:

This program provides global health opportunities ranging from emergency health projects in rural Romania, to pediatric HIV/AIDS in Kenya to OBGYN in Honduras. Click here for more information.

Dentistry Today:

Dentistry Today is a
program designed for college students in their first, second, or third year of college who are considering dentistry as a career.  The program allows participants to learn about the dental profession, dental education, dental specialties and the wide range of career options available within dentistry.  Topics include esthetic dentistry, geriatric dentistry, periodontics, implantology, orthodontics, forensic dentistry, anatomy and research. Minority Biomedical Research Support Program (MBRS):

As an MBRS Undergraduate or doctoral student, you will be mentored by Rutgers-Newark faculty members to perform biomedical and/or behavioral laboratory research. You will receive a salary, research supplies and travel funds to participate in scientific conferences. Doctoral students will receive full tuition remission. For more information click here.

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI):

This program places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities. Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engineering because of the nature of the experience. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. The different laboratories each offer different research opportunities (see Choosing a Lab).

The summer programs at the various laboratories will run from late May to mid-August, fall programs run from August through December and spring programs from January through May. The exact start date will depend on the laboratory and will be given to participants who have been accepted at that specific laboratory. Students are required to participate for the full term of the program.

Minority Student Summer Research Opportunity Program (MSSROP):

The program provides nine weeks of experience and participation in biomedical research. Students participating in the program will conduct research under the direction of a faculty member. Research assignments will be made based upon availability of research opportunities and according to the mutual interests of the faculty sponsors and student participants. Participants will have the opportunity to interact not only with the faculty member directing the research, but also with the graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows working at the site. Frequent meetings with other program participants along with one or more of the faculty sponsors will be scheduled as well as weekly seminars, workshops, and lectures. At the end of the 9 week period, program students will have the opportunity to present their work to their peers and faculty at a poster session. Each student will also be expected to write a report concerning the research work conducted and its relation to other work in progress at his/her site.

Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program:

The Pediatric Oncology Education program at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is funded by the National Institutes of Health / National Cancer Institute. The POE program offers a unique opportunity for students preparing for careers in the biomedical sciences, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, allied health, and veterinary medicine to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. The POE program provides a short-term training experience (internship) in either laboratory research or clinical research.

This internship lasts 11 weeks from May To August and pays $8.00/hour (Non Memphis residents are eligible for a housing subsidy). A minimum GPA of 3.4-4.0 is required in math and science and a minimum over all GPA of 3.4.
The deadline for receipt of ALL POE 2011 application materials will be February 1, 2011. Items postmarked, or faxed or emailed (letters only) no later than February 1, 2011 will be accepted.

A primary goal of the program is to encourage students to pursue a career in cancer research, either as a laboratory-based scientist or a physician scientist. Thus, qualified students with an interest in cancer research are particularly encouraged to apply.

Science MBA:

This program is
open to freshmen and juniors during the spring term only. It is a joint degree designed for undergraduate students majoring in natural or physical sciences (such as Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Geometry, Physics, Pre-Med/Dental). Students in the Science MBA program earn their undergraduate degree in science plus an MBA from Rutgers Business School. For more information on this program click here.

NYU: Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP):

The Sackler institute at NYU is looking for students who have completed their sophomore or junior years with a minimum GPA of 3.4 to participate in research. They must have completed one full semester of laboratory bench research. These students will get a 3500 stipend, traveling expenses to New York City and Housing Accommodations. To apply you must submit a personal essay, two letters of recommendation, and an official transcript.

UMDNJ: summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) in Neuroscience:

Outstanding applicants will be selected to join a research laboratory on the UMDNJ or Rutgers campus for a 10 week program, where they will engage in hands-on experimentation. In collaboration with their mentors, students will be expected to design and implement individual research projects during this period. This involves formulating a hypothesis, and learning laboratory skills, data collection and documentation. Areas of research involve a broad range of topics in developmental and adult neurobiology, including studies in: gene expression and regulation; molecular genetics; ion channel, receptor and enzyme function; hormone, cytokine and growth factor actions; cytoskeletal function; membrane structure; cell fate specification; spinal cord injury; behavior and learning.

Strong Children's Research Center: Summer Training Program:

The Strong Children's Research Center (SCRC) funds a student training program for outstanding undergraduate (completion of junior year by May of the current year), medical, and graduate students who plan to pursue a career in biomedical research or clinical research. This is an opportunity to develop skills in a variety of research methodologies whereby participants may contribute to a project and ultimately a scientific publication.

The Northeast Regional Alliance (NERA) MedPrep Scholars Program:

The Northeast Regional Alliance (NERA) MedPrep Scholars Program is a partnership between New Jersey Medical School, Mount Sinai School of Medicine Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Manhattan Staten Island Area Health Education Center.

The Program uniquely builds on the collective expertise of four outstanding institutions to expand health careers preparation for underrepresented and disadvantaged students from junior high school through medical school with the goal of increasing competitiveness for medical school.  Ultimately, we expect that our scholars will have the humanism, professionalism and interpersonal skills required of a future physician caring for a diverse population.

The Emergency Department Clinical Exposure, Research and Mentoring Program:

This program sponsored by Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Mentoring in Medicine allows student to volunteer in a busy urban emergency department (40-hour minimum required), shadow a board certified emergency medicine physician (12-hour minimum required), participate in community service activities (24-hour minimum required) and conduct clinical research (optional 6 months minimum).

To be eligible you need to be  part of a group historically underrepresented in Medicine (Black, Hispanic or Native American). You must also attend college (Freshman through Senior) or be a Premedical Post-baccalaureate Student or Students intending to reapply to medical school after one unsuccessful application.
