(10/17/10) Making Strides against Breast Cancer:


The American Cancer Society is organizing a march that will collect funds for breast cancer related research. MAPS has organized its own team to march on Sunday October 17th at 8:00 am. You can join our group by clicking here. Any donation is greatly appreciated. If you cannot contribute to this cause monetarily, it is OK. We'll be organizing several fund raising event for this charity and you can always be part of the effort. If not, being present and marching with us on that day will be enough.

(9/08/10) Student Showcase
:

Please join us in this showcase if you are interested in knowing more about our organization or about any of the other student organizations showcasing. this will take place in Samuel's Plaza, right outside of Robeson Campus Center from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

(4/24/10) Make a Difference Day: 

On Saturday April 24th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm students will be challenged to get involved in outreach to youth in the Newark area. Students will be put in small groups and sent to various community agencies within the city of Newark to volunteer on projects such as facility up keep, working with the youth and elderly, and park clean up. If any of you is interested please let me know.

(3/29/10) American University of Antigua Lecture:
 
If you ever wanted to know how to easily get a medical degree while at the same time enjoy of the life in the Caribbean, then this university might be for you. Come and join us while we talk about the opportunities AUA offers and how you can take advantage of them. Come to Hill 102 on Monday March 29th at 11:30 am. You will not regreat it!

(3/1/10) KAPLAN Preview Classroom:

If you plan to take the MCAT exam, you need to be prepared. Kaplan is offering and inside look at MCAT preparation classes that can take you to the level you need get a high score. This event will be held in Hill Hall Room 103 on March 1 at 11:30 am.


(02/19-20/10) SNMA Region IX Conference:

UMDNJ-NJMS will be the host of this year’s medical conference dedicated to find strong community leaders. More than 150 students and professionals will be attending this conference for various educational, leadership, community and networking opportunities. The registration fee is $50 for SNMA members, $40 for MAPS members, $50 for Non-SNMA members, $20 for high school students and $75 for physicians. To register for this conference click here.

 There will also be a Dinner Dance and Gala held at The Newark Club on February 20th. The admission fee is $35 for SNMA and MAPS members and $55 for Non-SNMA members. Click here to find all the conference documents.

(01/23/10) Region IX 2010 Pre-Med Conference: It's All About the Hustle.

On January 23, 2010 we will be holding the Annual 2010 MAPS Conference. This full-day conference is absolutely free to premedical students and features interactive workshops on the application process as well as a Medical Deans Panel and a Medical School recruitment fair.

(12/4/09) Community food Bank:

The Office of Campus and Community Relations is looking for student to come out on December 4, 2009 from 9:30-12:30 to take a trip to the Community Food Bank in Hillside, NJ to help tackle the issue of hunger during our Holiday Season. Transportation will be provided by Public Safety!!

Cytotechnology Program:

Cytotechnologists use microscopic , hystocytochemical and molecular techniques to examine cells from all body sources collected by swab or fine needle biopsy. They work closely with cytopathologists to analyze microscopic cellular changes to determine the presence of cancerous, infectious or benign diseases.

Medical Laboratory Science Program:

Medical Laboratory Scientists use sophisticated instruments and biomedical, microscopic, molecular, and immunological techniques to analyze medical specimens. They provide essential information to physicians about the presence, extent or absence of disease, as well as the effectiveness of treatment. They also apply their biomedical expertise in many areas such as cancer research, stem cell and organ transplantation, and infectious and genetic disease testing.

(11/06/10) AAMC Minority Student Medical Career Awareness Workshop and Recruitment Fair:

The Association of American Medical Colleges’ (AAMC’s) Diversity Policy and Programs host the annual Minority Student Medical Career Awareness Workshops and Recruitment Fair during the AAMC Annual Meeting.  
This year, the event is scheduled for Saturday, November 6, 2010 in the Omni sheriham Hotel, Washington, DC.  
This is a free event!!!!!

The workshops and recruitment fair’s target audiences are minority college and high school students, parents, advisers, guidance counselors, school administrators, and individuals interested in pursuing a career in medicine.  We welcome everyone. For registration and more information click here. (9/13/10) AUA college of Medicine Presentation:

On Monday September 13 at 11:30 am Brianna Tolli will be speaking about the American University of Antigua (AUA) in Hill Hall 101.
If you ever wanted to know how to easily get a medical degree while at the same time enjoy of the life in the Caribbean, then this university might be for you. Food and refreshments will be served.

(4/25/10) Susan Komen Race for the Cure: 

This is a race in which participants donate money that goes towards research to find a cure for breast cancer. They want people to volunteer during the race on Sunday April 25th. The race begins at 7:00 am in Essex County Branch Brook, Newark but volunteers are expected to be there by 6:00 am. The event goes until noon and they’d like to know if some people can stay a bit later. There are two kind of volunteering positions available:

Water distribution – provide water to participants at different points of the way.

Guides – direct participants along the pat and cheer them up as they go.

If you are interested in volunteering please let me know ASAP. You’ll need to provide me with your name, email address, and phone number and I’d need to know whether you can stay there after the race and which position you prefer.

(3/10/10) Exam Krackers:

On Wednesday March 10 we’ll have a representative from Exam Krackers come and speak about their services and how you can increase your chances of getting a high score on the MCAT. There we’ll be food and refreshments served. It will be held in hill Hall 102 at 2:30 pm.
 
(2/24/10) KAPLAN Admission's Seminar:
On February 24 a representative from Kaplan will come to talk about the tools necessary to get accepted into med school. Information about MCAT preparation and the application process will be provided. Please assist to this event and take advantage of the opportunity to know what steps you need to take in order to get accepted into medical school. The seminar will be held in Hill Hall Room 101 at 2:30 pm.

(1/25/10) Student Organization Showcase:

We will be present at the Student Organization Showcase taking place in the Essex room of Paul Robeson Campus Center on January 25th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. (12/05/09) The 4th Annual "Yes I can be a health care professional!" Conference: 

Mentoring in Medicine will be hosting this event which looks to increase the presence of underrepresented health care professionals through mentoring, career development and exposure.

(10/17/09) FREE MCAT Practice Exam: 

Princeton Review will provide a free MCAT Practice exam on October 17th from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm. This will be done in Hill Hall 103. Please take adavntage of this opportunity to realize how well prepared for the MCAT exam you really are. Click here to register. 

(09/30/09) Latino Arts Festival: 

As part of our commitment to the community, MAPS helped raise awareness about several health problems that trouble the Hispanic population through a series of games that engaged the people assisting.

(03/31/10 – 04/04/10) SNMA Annual Education Conference:

This is a 5 day conference that will take place in the Sheraton Hotel in Chicago, IL. People interested need to be SNMA members which can be done on their website www.snma.org ($25 fee). The registration fee for the conference itself is $195 and the deadline is February 15. To get more information about this conference click here.  

(2/13/10) KAPLAN MCAT Free Practice Exams:

There will be FREE Practice exams given by Kaplan on February 13. Anyone who plans to go to Graduate School, Law School, Medical School, Dental School, Optometry School, Pharmacy School, or Nursing School can take a FREE Practice Admissions Exam on this day. To register please click here. 

(12/5/09) Annual Regional Pre-Medical conference:

Hosted by the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.


The conference objectives include:


  • Addressing healthcare issues affecting the Black and Latino communities.
  • Workshops on preparing for a career in the health profession.
  • Networking opportunities with medical students, physicians, and administrators of color.
The conference is open to all high school and undergraduate college students interested in the Health and Medical Professions.

(10/24/09) & (11/21/09) A day with Penn Minority Medical Students:

The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine will host an event for undergraduate premedical students underrepresented in medicine, "A Day with Penn Minority Medical Students". This event will be an excellent opportunity to learn about the school, its educational programs, student life, and strategies for becoming a strong candidate for entrance to medical school. The day will include a tour, interactive workshops, lunch, and the opportunity to speak with Penn Med minority students who will share their perspectives on life at Penn Med.

(10/18/09) Making Strides against Breast Cancer:

On October 18th we'll be joining the American Cancer Society in a walk to support the treatment and research of this disease. Registration begins at 8:00 am, the walk begins at 10:00 am. (10/03/09) Mount sinai School of Medicine Open House:

Students got to experience first hand what a medicine college has to offer. They also ot first hand information about admission, test scores and different programs available to them. 

(09/28/09) MCAT Strategy Session:

A Strategy Session provided by Princeton Review gave students useful hints and key elements to remember while taking the MCAT exam. They also were given a couple practice questions for perspective about the exam.
