R
each Out and Read:

Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national nonprofit organization that promotes early literacy by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud in pediatric exam rooms across the nation.

Doctors and nurses know that growing up healthy means growing up with books. The ROR program provides the tools to help promote children's developmental skills and later school success.

You can donate your gently used books and help little children read. For more information click here.

The Urban League of Essex County:

The mission of the Urban League is to assist African American and other disadvantaged urban residents in the achievement of social and economic equality. The League implements its mission through program services, bridge building, and advocacy.

Because of volunteer efforts, children involved in mentoring programs are doing better in school, and parents can become self-sufficient by working while knowing their child is well care for at the Urban League. Volunteering is easy and fun, with a flexible time commitment. You can learn new skills, meet new people, and make a positive difference in the community. Click here for more information.

Big Brother / Big sister:

Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with proven results.

You can get involved today by volunteering or by making a donation.

Community-based mentoring is the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters relationship, where Bigs and Littles get together on their own to share fun activities they both enjoy. Matches typically meet for one hour a week.

Getting together is a great time for both the Big and the Little. It doesn’t require a special occasion or expensive activities; just a few hours every month to share the simple things you already like to do. Things like….

  • Shooting hoops
  • Playing a board game
  • Sharing a pizza
  • Taking a walk in the park
  • Or just hanging out and talking.
In school-based mentoring programs, Bigs and Littles meet for one-to-one mentoring in the classroom, school library, school computer room, neighborhood community center, or other set location. Bigs and Littles typically meet once a week to read together, play sports or computer games, or simply talk about life and personal issues – just as friends do.

School-based mentoring is not a tutoring program. However, research has shown that of all children matched with a Big in school:

  • 58% improved their school performance
  • 65% showed higher levels of self-confidence
  • 55% had a better attitude toward school
